Malgorzata Polozow and Robert Borkowski arrived to Tuam few weeks ago. Before that they visited Cork and Dublin, but because of work offer Robert got in work agency in Dublin they moved to County Galway.

They decided to leave Poland and settle down on Green Island for a while not because of the higher salary. They needed the adventure. Before they came in here they were reading a lot about Irish history, traditions. Traditional Irish music became very popular in Poland nowadays, which seems to be a reason lots of the Poles are interested in this culture. This Polish couple need to work to pay bills but working and saving money are not main purposes they are going to realize in here. They are not only taking, they want to give something as well, leave in Ireland a part of themselves. Their achievements in Poland can be evidence that they are getting involved in different activities with success.

Robert’s first occupation was cabinet -maker but after a while he changed his interest into computer science. He started to produce multimedia presentations and websites. Lately he was running his own business making promotional products and producing computer publications.

Malgosia started studying at Academy of Physical Education but she quitted because of her journey to United States. After that she came back to studying; she graduated from Cosmetic College with excellent results. She had been working as a model for few years. In 2002 her photo was on the cover of popular Polish magazine.(...)

They are both interested in sport; swimming took the most important place in Robert’s life. He had been training professional swimming for 9 years in Plock. Malgosia is swimming as well, she is an amateur but in spite of that she reached high results. Robert says a lot about benefits resulted from swimming. “Swimming affects young body perfectly, immunizes, strengthens, which is why people would not be susceptible to infections and other diseases. Swimming we are growing up as strong healthful and tall men; tall because in water our vertebral column is not loaded by body weight and gravitation, so all the muscles are working and lengthening our skeletal system” – Robert explained. Swimming is a great way to loose weight as well.

Malgosia and Robert heard about Lee Swim, one of the top open water swimming events in Ireland and obviously they are going to take a part in this competition. It is not an expensive thing, few hundreds euros, but if they find sponsors and media patron they will do much more than only take a part in this event. Robert would like to use this opportunity to promote swimming in this area and build some kind of philosophy about this discipline (especially that we have a new pool in Tuam). They would like to take a part in Lee Swim as representatives of Tuam. This event is taking place at the end of July so as soon they start everyday training they will have better results. Robert admits honestly that top positions are not out of the questions because he had checked previous results.

In 1987 Robert was in top ten in Poland on 50 metres distance free style. When he was only 14 he won on 4 kilometres distance. He would like to dedicate his participation in Lee Swim to his friend, swimmer Janek Paluch who died 3 years ago in tragic circumstances.

It is possible that after few years living in Ireland they will decide to move to the other place. They admit that staying in Ireland is an adventure for them, is a great opportunity to learn English to get to know different culture, traditions, but they are going to leave some part of themselves in here; they want to share their hobby and skills with local people.
